What is Kava?
Kava, scientifically known as piper methysticum, is a plant related to the pepper plant and grown throughout the South Pacific Islands. The kava beverage is obtained by aqueous suspension and the extraction of fresh or dried kava root in water. The beverage is then typically consumed immediately, or shortly thereafter. In Vanuatu, kava was traditionally a ceremonial drink consumed mainly by the men and has been consumed by South Pacific Islanders for over 3000 years. Today kava is enjoyed by both the men and women of Vanuatu.
