What does Kava smell and taste like?

We have been drinking kava for over 20 years and we can honestly say the taste does not improve over time. Kava is an acquired taste and if you think it will be like sipping cocktails, you’re sadly mistaken. We don’t drink kava for the taste (few kava drinkers do), we drink it for the effects. That’s why we say the best way to drink kava is to chug the kava down quick and have a chaser ready to go like water or a sweet drink (ginger ale, raspberry soft drinks) and something to nibble on (we love watermelon, apple or pear for this). Some people say kava looks like dirty water. The best way we can describe how Vanuatu kava looks and tastes to us is, yes, it is a brown coloured liquid with a strong but not unpleasant smell and tastes earthy and peppery and will leave a numb feeling in your mouth temporally – trust us the benefits of the effects far outweigh the taste!
